Blast Furnace Slag is a by-product from the manufacturing of steel in a blast furnace. Initially in its molten form, it is diverted to a granulator where it is quenched with water and rapidly cooled to form glassy, non-metallic granules which are silicates and aluminosilicates of calcium. These granules are dried to produce Granulated Blast Furnace Slag (GBFS) and then ground to a suitable fineness to produce Ground Granulated Blast Furnace Slag (GGBFS). When used as a cementitious material in concrete, GGBFS enhances long-term performance and durability characteristics while reducing life-cycle and maintenance costs. We source GGBFS from JSW Steel Ltd. - which is one of the largest steel producers in India.

At JSW, GBFS is ground to a controlled fineness through Vertical Roller Mills with the latest technology and quality control systems to produce GGBFS. The grinding process takes account of mean particle size, grading (particle size distribution) and particle shape, thus giving quality-assured material which is consistent, predictable and suitable for varied applications.

In concrete, JSW GGBFS may be proportioned from 20% to 80% depending on the application. It is substituted for Portland cement on a one-to-one basis by mass. The proportion of JSW GGBFS used is usually dictated by requirements for strength, durability, time of set, heat generation, or the resistance of the concrete mixture to alkali silica reaction (ASR) and sulphate attack. Water demand for any given slump generally reduces by 5% upon addition of JSW GGBFS. Some key advantages of JSW GGBFS in concrete include high compressive strength, high flexural strength, low permeability and chemical attacks, low heat of hydration and thermal cracking in mass concrete, alkali silica reaction and sulphate attack mitigation, improved workability and finishing characteristics. The service life of structures using JSW GGBFS is enhanced by more than 100% on account of superior durability of concrete. GGBFS use in concrete qualifies for credit under the U.S. Green Building Council's popular LEED™ rating system for sustainable construction.

Unorganized traders and exporters have no product knowledge nor any understanding of the business, and rely on price as a weapon to lure customers. Beware, a lower price always comes with compromises and risks. An apparent short-term gain due to lower prices could get wiped out by much bigger losses and long-term damage to the reputation and business of the buyer.

Please check the following before procuring GGBFS from any supplier:

  • 'Valid' long-term supply contract with the steel producer
  • Infrastructure, quality control, bagging systems and warehousing/ logistics set up
  • Quality control process
  • Multiple, periodic independent lab test reports for the last 6 months
  • Detailed bag specifications to see GSM of fabric, weight of bag, liner, lamination, etc.
  • Verifiable sales volumes in past 12 months as proof of regular supplies in local and export markets, backed by genuine customer references
  • Company documents to verify credibility and experience in the business (more the better!)

De-Bagging of GGBFS

The discharge of big bags into bulk tankers or batching plants is very often problematic, due to lumps created by fine particles due to vibration, ambient humidity, temperature fluctuations and compaction during shipping, transportation and storage.

JAYCEE recommends a simple but effective de-bagging facility to remove lumps, and load bulk tankers/ silos in a dust-free manner. The debagging equipment is furnished with an in-built lump breaker macerating any material containing lumps again into free flowing powder. Two operators are required to man the system and one forklift or Hydra is required to carry the big bags to the lift-up point of the de-bagging station. All large customers and distributors in every territory should install a de-bagging station with in-built lump breaker to have seamless discharge of big bags. JAYCEE can also provide such systems in cases where it is not available locally.

Use of GGBFS to replace Portland cement in concrete yields substantial environmental benefits as follows:

  • Conserves natural resources and reduces mining
  • Reduces energy consumption by approximately 40%
  • Saves up to 59% of the embodied carbon dioxide emissions and 42% of the embodied energy required to manufacture concrete and its constituent materials
  • Uses an industrial by-product (GBFS) which would not otherwise be fully utilized
  • Increased durability and service life/reduced maintenance burden for the structure, particularly against abrasion and impact

The service life of structures using GGBFS is enhanced by more than 100% on account of superior durability of concrete. Since the structure will last longer, no additional raw materials and energy will be required to rebuild or repair it, which is a significant ecological advantage.

GGBFS use in concrete qualifies for credit under the U.S. Green Building Council's popular LEED™ rating system for sustainable construction. The Lower Cement Concrete Technology (LCCT) is also being promoted for reducing Portland cement content in concrete by maximum addition of GGBFS. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) of USA recognizes the benefits of using GGBFS, and requires that Federally-funded projects, in most cases, include GGBFS in concrete specifications.
