Blast Furnace Slag is a by-product from the manufacturing of steel in a blast furnace. Initially in its molten form, it is diverted to a granulator where it is quenched with water and rapidly cooled to form glassy, non-metallic granules which are silicates and aluminosilicates of calcium. These granules are dried to produce Granulated Blast Furnace Slag (GBFS).

Due to stringent quality control in the steel production process, the chemical composition of its by-product GBFS is highly stable. Regular checks are carried out on the granulate to monitor the amount of glass produced as a control on the effectiveness of the quenching process. GBFS is light in color, around 3mm down to dust in size and has a relatively high moisture content. The material is allowed to drain by stocking in heaps for sufficient time.

GBFS is ground to a suitable fineness to produce Ground Granulated Blast Furnace Slag (GGBFS), which is used as a cementitious material in concrete to enhance long-term performance and durability characteristics while reducing life-cycle and maintenance costs. With the poor quality, contamination (silt, clay, etc.) and depletion of natural sand, as well as significant negative environmental impact of crushed sand (rock/granite), GBFS has found its way as an effective replacement of natural sand/ crushed sand in concrete as a fine aggregate. Advantages include reduction of cement content, higher reactive silica and negligible silt content, improved strength, reduced permeability and chemical attacks, increased durability, lower shrinkage cracks, better cohesiveness and workability, improved bonding and smoother finish.

We source GBFS from multiple, large steel producers in India such as Essar Steel, Vizag Steel and JSW Steel. These steel plants are located at the coast (both West and East), which makes exports in bulk very efficient and cost-competitive.

Unorganized traders and exporters have no product knowledge nor any understanding of the business/ logistics, and rely on price as a weapon to lure customers. Beware, a lower price always comes with compromises and risks. An apparent short-term gain due to lower prices could get wiped out by much bigger losses and long-term damage to the reputation and business of the buyer.

  • Multiple, periodic independent lab test reports for the last 6 months
  • Verifiable sales volumes in past 12 months as proof of regular supplies in local and export markets, backed by genuine customer references
  • Company documents to verify credibility and experience in the business (more the better

Environmental Impact of GBFS

Use of GBFS as a fine aggregate in concrete, substituting natural sand/ crushed sand (rock/ granite) helps conserve natural resources, reduce mining, save energy and reduce emissions. It also increases durability and service life/reduced maintenance burden for the structure. Since the structure will last longer, no additional raw materials and energy will be required to rebuild or repair it, which is a significant ecological advantage.

GBFS is used to produce GGBFS, which has significant positive environmental impact. GGBFS use in concrete qualifies for credit under the U.S. Green Building Council's popular LEED™ rating system for sustainable construction. The Lower Cement Concrete Technology (LCCT) is also being promoted for reducing Portland cement content in concrete by maximum addition of GGBFS. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) of USA recognizes the benefits of using GGBFS, and requires that Federally-funded projects, in most cases, include GGBFS in concrete specifications.
